Q&As - We asked Business Librarian, Tracey Rinehart!

How do you collaborate with faculty to support teaching, research, and curriculum development across the business school?

We offer classroom instruction, workshops on specific business topics, and provide individual research references. We also collaborate with faculty by providing research and course guides on business-related subjects, ensuring that the most helpful information is on their class Canvas sites at students’ fingertips.

Which library resources do students rely on most, and what lesser鈥慿nown tools or databases do you wish more students explored?

It really depends on the student and their program of study at Cox. We provide a wide range of databases, and finance students tend to lean into those financial resources that help them most, such as Bloomberg and FactSet, while marketing students are proficient in searching Mintel, for example. We would like more students to explore holistically, however, as no single discipline exists in a vacuum. Company financials are important, but consumer sentiment is equally so in predicting trends. Utilizing the array of resources that are in the Duda Family Business Library will provide more well-rounded research.

SMU Libraries emphasize thoughtful, responsible use of generative AI. How are you helping students build AI literacy grounded in critical thinking?

AI literacy is now a cornerstone of all in-class sessions and workshops, in that we at least mention the importance of its ever-presence. We teach an AI literacy workshop to all first-year students and explore how to responsibly have artificial intelligence be your assistant, not the other way around. This workshop also includes how to check up on AI to make sure it is working for you in an authoritative and accurate way.

How does the library support students beyond traditional research help, whether through community, collaboration spaces, or personalized guidance?

Our library is frequently the collaborative space to practice presentations, work in groups, and get ready for networking events. Since our resources are industry-standard, we remind students that the information obtained from them is exactly what they would be looking for in their internships and careers and encourage them to gather information before their events. A well-informed student always has the advantage in these situations.

What’s one thing you wish every incoming BBA student knew about the library from day one?

Business Librarians are here to help. Ask us anything, from class research to career research to the best places to eat around campus. We will be here for you.

Thank you, Tracey, for the invaluable support you provide to our SMU Cox students and faculty. We know future Mustangs will appreciate seeing how the Duda Family Business Library helps them succeed from day one.
